The Power of Broadband Internet in the Age of 4G

The advent of 4G internet in India has taken the telecom sector by storm. While the incumbent providers fight it with the newcomers to try and figure out who’s best among them, it is the internet service providers (ISP) who are really winning the game. Internet usage is growing exponentially in India, with a growth of over 9% in the number of broadband subscribers in 2016 compared to the previous year. A shot-up in the number of smartphone users may have resulted in this upward trend in internet users, but the reality is that home users still prefer broadband service providers near them.

Broadband vs Mobile Internet

The argument that more people make use of mobile internet, which automatically makes telecommunication companies the top players is a poor one. A person using mobile internet from a given carrier will use it for services such as WhatsApp Messenger and Facebook among other applications. On the other hand, a person who uses a desktop PC has much heavier requirements such as downloading a full-length film or studying a paper using resources from different educational websites. Using the hotspot feature on your smartphone to use mobile internet is not only a hassle but will also lead to high bills.

Varied Download Limitations

Moreover, the limitations are dramatically different. A person using a broadband plan from his home WiFi connection gets more than 50 GB internet on an average at a speed of over 2 MBps. Although FUP caps are at place, this is more than enough for a home user, because even if he/she exhausts this limit, the internet can still be used at a lower speed.
The case is not the same with mobile internet. With plans such as 1 GB 4G internet at a specified price and pro-rate pricing for internet after that and no guarantee of a specific speed, the user not only gets pinched by the provider, but also ends up rationing his/her internet.

Dedicated Internet is Always Preferred

The volatility of a signal/network in a smartphone and the recent case of call drops further worsens the case of mobile data providers. Local internet service providers rely on the good old technology and make use of modems to transmit internet connection to homes – both wirelessly and through cables. Further, having a dedicated internet connection at home also helps you make your house Wi-Fi-enabled. Just invest on a good-quality router and the entire family can watch videos at 1080p without the fear of limitations and restrictions.

8 out of 10 residences today are Wi-Fi enabled and it is not mobile internet, but dedicated broadband that they obtain from the ISPs. The revenue information may not be public, but if you ask your closest friend about the internet that he uses at home, you will most definitely hear the name of a broadband player.

The fight to be the best internet provider in India is skewed. The bigger picture may be on the telecom companies which make headlines every day, but established ISPs like Tikona Broadband are definitely the ones winning the game. Tikona Digital Networks provides home broadband and enterprise networking services in about 25 cities across India, making it one of the top broadband players in the country
